Winners Announced for 7th Annual Student Podcast Contest
The New York Times 7th Annual Student Podcast Contest has come to an end. After asking teens to craft a unique five-minute podcast, the top picks have been made from over 1,100 entries. The contest identified 11 winners, 12 runners-up and gave out honorable mentions to another 35 for their intriguing topics and captivating narratives.

Paul George's podcast, known for its variety of guests, has gained significant popularity. Recently, after developing an interest in golf, George disclosed his ideal guest from outside the basketball world.
Malcolm Gladwell, a renowned journalist and author of five best-selling books, is hosting a new podcast that tells the inspiring tales of American heroes. This information comes from iHeartMedia. The podcast, titled "Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage", debuted its first episode on June 26th. Each week it will spotlight the life and courage of one Medal of Honor awardee while exploring topics like heroism, self-sacrifice, human potential and why some people choose to put themselves in danger for others.
The podcast "The Unforgotten" is set to premiere on July 1, featuring ten episodes. The show will be hosted by Carol Dawson, a writer, and Wes Ferguson, known for his documentary podcasts “Devil Town” and “Standoff.” This series revolves around the unsolved murder case of Shelley Watkins in 1993. She was a rich young mother who was found dead in Texas's Trinity River. Despite strong evidence pointing towards her killer, nobody has been held responsible for her death till now.
The first collective bargaining agreement has been approved by the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) members at iHeart Podcast Network. The 100-strong group agreed to the three-year contract following over two years of discussions and a charge against iHeartMedia managers for alleged intimidation and questioning employees about their union support.
Cowboys teammates Micah Parsons and Malik Hooker may have some unresolved issues. On Keyshawn Johnson’s podcast, “All Facts No Brakes,” Hooker gave some advice to Parsons. He suggested that Parsons should focus more on improving their team's weak run game rather than his weekly podcast appearances. He questioned if Parson's priority was the audience of his podcast or the success of their team and their goal to win the Super Bowl.

Spotify has seen a significant increase in the number of video podcasts on their platform, rising from 100,000 in 2023 to over 250,000 currently. These podcasts have garnered a substantial audience with more than 170 million viewers.
The majority (over 70%) of these viewers watch the video podcasts actively rather than as background noise. In fact, almost one-third of monthly podcast users in the U.S. and nearly one-fourth globally engage with video content.
Year-over-year growth is evident with a rise of 40% for global users engaging with videos monthly. The creators providing this visual content are also growing at an impressive rate - there's been a close to 70% increment year-on-year.
U.S., Brazil, and Mexico lead as top markets where creators release their videos. It's worth noting that around every fifth podcaster from both Brazil and the Philippines releases video content - nearly twice what it was last year.
In terms of total podcast consumption hours, Chile sees about a quarter being dedicated to videos while Brazil accounts for over 15%.
