The "Humanity Unlocked" podcast series by Wisconsin Humanities, now in its second season, brings to light the stories of formerly incarcerated individuals who have engaged with humanities such as writing and art during their time in prison. The aim is to amplify the human experiences within incarceration and highlight how these activities can offer a sense of identity beyond criminal records. Not focusing on why they were imprisoned, the narratives explore how engagement with humanities offers ways of self-expression, meaning-making and restoration of humanity for those impacted by the justice system.

$359,600 Grant Allows Use of Podcast Platform for 30 Stations

CPB has given a $359,600 grant for 30 public media stations to use PRX's podcast platform Dovetail at no cost. The platform helps distribute audio content, provides audience data, manages ads, and identifies fundraising opportunities. It is currently used by about 35 stations and supports over 150 podcasts.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is increasing his media presence with appearances on various platforms, including the SmartLess podcast and Jimmy Kimmel Live. This move follows criticism of his debate performance against Republican Senator JD Vance. The SmartLess podcast, hosted by actors Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, has been politically active this year, featuring interviews with presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

Meet Dr. Peter Stiepleman, the host of An Imperfect Leader podcast. With over 20 years of experience in teaching and leadership roles across various school districts, he's an expert, but a self-proclaimed imperfect leader himself. From starting his journey in Oakland Public Schools to becoming the superintendent of Missouri's 4th largest school district, Dr. Peter has seen it all. His goal with this series is not just to share his own experiences but also learn from other leaders' stories - their triumphs, challenges and lessons learnt along the way.

How did you come up with the name of your podcast?

The name came from the notion that leaders are always being told that by reading X or doing Y, they’ll achieve perfection. We’re not perfect. We shouldn’t want to be perfect. We should be constantly striving to learn from our experiences. It is through our mistakes where our greatest learning takes place. We should recognize imperfection as a real advantage. We should be imperfect leaders.

What is the main focus or theme of your show?

The most important skill a leader can learn is to deconstruct decisions and the lessons learned from that experience. Educational leaders are not taught to be reflective decision-makers. What I mean by that is they make decisions and then quickly assign a value (either good or bad). The main focus of the show is to ask leaders to think back on a decision and engage in an After-Action Review.

Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you?

Yes! When Dr. Avis Williams in New Orleans told me that people don't really want transparency. I mean, they don't want to know every part of a decision. What they want is CLARITY. That really stuck out for me. Dr. Scott Menzel in Scottsdale, Arizona boiled down his decision-making to a very simple motto: Because Kids. If you can run every decision through that filter, you'll make good decisions.

Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why?

Meeting Jamie AlmanzÃn has been a highlight. We hit it off and now, in season 3, he will be joining me on episodes. I'm thrilled!

What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about?

Yes! Season 3 will include some incredible leaders, and it will include Jamie Almanzan as a co-host/commentator. Jamie is a facilitator, teacher, curriculum developer and leadership coach, and is the founder of The Equity Collaborative in Oakland, California. He is so good at asking listeners to consider some of the things he heard throughout the episode. Plus, he's really fun and engaging!
