High Engagement Seen in Sports Podcast Advertising Sport podcasts are highly trusted by listeners and represent a strong opportunity for marketing, according to research from Sport Social Podcast Network and Kantar. The study found that sport podcast listeners are more likely to trust advertisements on these platforms compared to other channels, and also more likely to respond to ad promotions. NY Times Launches Paid Podcast Subscriptions The New York Times is introducing podcast subscriptions on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, charging for access to archived episodes and early releases. UC San Diego Launches a Series on Living with Chronic Illness UC San Diego's Department of Communication is launching a monthly podcast called "Living Chronically" in January 2025, highlighting experiences of people with chronic diseases. The podcast will be produced by students and instructors as part of a service-learning course focused on health media and patient advocacy. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background? I've spent my entire career in broadcasting, first as a TV news reporter and anchor, then as a morning radio show host. I loved podcasts and have listened since you actually had to plug your iPod into the computer to download shows! | What inspired you to start a podcast? My son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2006 and I was always looking for a news-focused show about T1D. There were a lot of great patient advocacy podcasts, but nothing like what I was looking for. When I left radio in 2015, I started Diabetes Connections. Our new show, Sticks Together is because my husband and I just love playing golf and have fun talking about it. |
How did you come up with the name of your podcast? Diabetes Connections is based on the name of the first paid presentation I was asked to do. I'd blogged for a long time when I was asked to present to other parents of kids with T1D. I'm passionate about in-person connections, so I talked about why we need "Diabetes Connections" and how to make them. "Sticks Together" came to me out of the blue after trying to come up with a name for a year! | What is the main focus or theme of your show? Diabetes Connections provides information and inspiration for people who use insulin. We talk to tech companies, health care providers, and inspiring people. Focus is mostly type 1, but it overlaps sometimes into type 2. Sticks Together is all about couples golf ![]() |
Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you? So many! My favorite thing to do is to bring my listeners' questions to tech and healthcare company CEOs. I truly believe we've had an impact. But sometimes it's just fun! I've talked to celebrities and prof. athletes. I also told an Eli Lllly rep to "be a hero" and lower the cost of insulin at the beginning of COVID. They didn't, but I'm glad to have had my say.
| Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why? Narrowing it down, Victor Garber was a highlight as was Olympic gold medalist Gary Hall - both live with type 1. But there are dozens of "ordinary" people with T1D who've been fabulous guests. Everyone inspires me and helps me with my relationship with my son, which is a cool bonus. What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about? We're marking 10 years of Diabetes Connections next year! I would love to do some sort of retrospective or even an awards show. Would need some help with that! I've thought about stopping at ten years, but so far, I plan to keep going. We'd love to take Sticks Together on the road eventually. Get invited to some golf courses/tournaments and feature some fun destinations. |
