Get Insights with the 2024 Australian Podcast Report

Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA) and Triton Digital have released the Australian Podcast Report for 2024, revealing a 37% increase in listenership over two years with nearly six million weekly listeners. The report found that podcasts are mostly consumed via mobile devices and popular amongst younger Australians, with genres like Society & Culture, True Crime, and News being most dominant. CRA CEO Lizzie Young acknowledged the growth of podcasting and its potential as a platform for advertisers to connect with audiences.

YouTube Tests Faster Playback Speed for Podcasts

YouTube is trialing a feature for Premium subscribers to play video at four times the normal speed, doubling the current rate. The test, which will conclude on February 19th, is only available on Android or iOS devices and raises questions about user comprehension and ad effectiveness. YouTube is also testing a 'jump ahead' function for web users, higher-quality audio level at 256kbps, and features for iOS devices that enable watching Shorts when switching apps and automatic download of recommended Shorts.

Participatory Research Through Podcasting

The Preservative Party, a team of 14- to 24-year-olds, has launched a podcast series named "Whose Power?" focused on overlooked power dynamics in traditional histories. This was inspired by research into late 19th-century women's energy decisions and aims to counter academic gatekeeping by giving voice to diverse individuals. The success of the project is attributed to fostering trust, embracing vulnerability and reflection, challenging norms through laughter and fun, as well as valuing silence.

Call for Entries: Annual Women Podcasters Awards

The nominations for the second annual Women Podcasters Awards are now open, aiming to recognize women's voices in podcasting globally. This year introduces four categories of awards: Podcasters, Broadcasters, Producers, and Expert Guests. Nominations run from February 1 to April 30, with voting taking place between May 1-31.

New Podcast to Revisit 'How I Met Your Mother'

Josh Radnor and Craig Thomas, who were part of the hit show "How I Met Your Mother," are launching a podcast called "How We Made Your Mother." The podcast will explore each episode of the much-loved series and discuss its impact on them, fans, and culture. The idea came from Radnor's wife Jordana Jacobs, with the first episode coming out on March 10.

    Gorkem Ercan, the founding Distinguished Engineer and CTO of Jozu, discussed time management and prioritization for both personal and team work. He highlighted the importance of visual tools like lists and boards to track contributions, acknowledging that priorities evolve continuously. Ercan also emphasized on giving back to open source projects for their sustainability while rectifying misconceptions about them being always "free".
