Interning at Europe's #1 Podcast: Ruth Ameku's Story

Ruth Ameku, a fan of "The Diary of a CEO" podcast, landed an internship with The Flight Studio thanks to her initiative at the UK Black Business Show. At the event, she managed to speak directly to Steven Bartlett, founder of The Flight Studio and host of the podcast, asking him for some time to talk; he responded by offering her an internship. Now several months into what was originally a one-month placement, Ameku is enjoying working alongside experts in the field such as Grace Andrews who went from Social Media Manager to Marketing and Brand Director within the company.

College Podcast Challenge Returns for Fourth Year

The NPR College Podcast Challenge is back for its fourth year, offering a $5,000 cash prize and the opportunity to have student podcasts broadcasted to the NPR audience. The contest welcomes entries from all students, regardless of their field of study or level of podcasting experience. This year's new rule allows submissions up to 12 minutes long, in response to requests from students for longer audio project entries.

Justine believes in talking openly about the tough stuff and reminding her listeners that they're not alone in their journey. She embraces all aspects of mental health and encourages others to do the same—making them nothing short of badass.

How did you come up with the name of your podcast?

I am huge on authenticity and uniqueness. I wanted a title that reflected on my bold personality. I hated hearing from society that people who are mentally ill are weak. I wanted to change the narrative. The best word that aligned with my personality and attitude was “badass”. The word mentally comes from of course “mental”. I believe that mindset is everything and the struggles that we go through make us “mentally a badass”

What is the main focus or theme of your show?

The focus of the show is to make the uncomfortable conversations comfortable. Mental health has been a taboo topic when it shouldn’t. We shouldn’t feel that we can’t talk to other people when we are struggling. The more people that share their story on my podcast, the more comfortable listeners will feel opening up about their mental health struggles.

Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you?

I feel that there is a memorable moments in all of my interviews. It is really hard to think about one specific moment.

Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why?

This is a really hard one because I love all my guest and they all bring value to the podcast. If you were to ask me which episode made an impact on myself, it would be my interview with Thais Gibson. We talked about tapping in our subconscious mind to heal trauma.

What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about?

I have multiple guest recordings scheduled at this time so expect a episode with a different topic every week :) There may be another exciting plan in January but nothing is set in stone yet :)
