London Podcast Festival Returns for Ninth Year in September

The London Podcast Festival is preparing for its ninth year, confirmed to take place from 5th to 15th September. Over the years, the festival has seen a footfall of around 60,000 visitors and hosted about 700 podcasters. The event aims to represent diverse styles, genres and communities in podcasting.

Audioboom has extended its collaborations with five popular podcasts: The Broski Report with Brittany Broski, National Park After Dark, The Nateland Podcast, Minds of Madness and Serialously with Annie Elise. Together, these shows have gathered over 70 million downloads in the past year.

  • A recent survey by MARU/Matchbox of 603 regular podcast listeners shows that YouTube is fast becoming the go-to platform for podcasts, overtaking Spotify and Apple in popularity. The data also provides insights into listener preferences and trends.

  • Cumulus Media/Westwood One's Liz Mayer and Paul Riismandel from Signal Hill Insights reveal that YouTube is now the preferred choice for 31% of podcast consumers, beating out Spotify at 21% and Apple at just 12%.

  • Interestingly, the majority of YouTube's audience skews younger and male, while Spotify attracts a young demographic as well but Apple appeals to older podcast enthusiasts.

  • Due to its role as an entertainment search engine, YouTube has become a key place where listeners discover new podcasts - with 31% finding new content here compared to only 24% on Spotify and a mere 12% on Apple. However, over half (53%) of these users also listen to podcasts elsewhere indicating less brand loyalty among this group.

  • Given that it's primarily a video platform, there are mixed format preferences among YouTube users: around one-third each prefer audio-only (36%), actively watching videos (33%), or listening with video minimized (31%). Notably though newer podcast listeners seem more drawn towards video than their veteran counterparts.
