Are Traditional Podcasts Becoming Outdated?

Podcasts are increasingly incorporating visual elements to cater to audiences' changing preferences, as seen in popular shows like The Joe Rogan Experience. This trend is also observed in narrative podcasts, which require more effort to create engaging audiovisual content. A new podcast titled True Crime Reports by Al Jazeera exemplifies this shift, focusing on lesser-known crime stories from the global south.

CAROLYN KIELS PODCAST JOURNEY

Meet Carolyn Kiel, the host of Beyond 6 Seconds podcast. She has years of experience in creating training programs and now uses her skills to spotlight the stories of neurodivergent and disabled entrepreneurs, creatives, and advocates. Join her as she breaks down common misunderstandings about neurodiversity through powerful conversations.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I am an instructional designer with 10+ years of experience designing employee learning & development programs at global companies. I have a BA in Psychology and MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I'm also a singer who has performed across the NY City area, as well as the host of the award-winning Beyond 6 Seconds podcast for the past 7 years. I'm also a late-diagnosed autistic woman.

What inspired you to start a podcast?

I started podcasting as a creative outlet and an opportunity to talk with interesting people and learn more about the businesses they built, the things they are passionate about, and the impact they're having on the world. I prioritized talking with people who were doing amazing things that weren't well publicized or well known. I switched my focus to neurodiversity after discovering I'm autistic.

How did you come up with the name of your podcast?

I got the name "Beyond 6 Seconds" from a statistic I read that said recruiters only look at your resume for about 6 seconds to judge your merits for a job. I am not sure how valid that statistic is, but it inspired me to go beyond those 6-seconds first impressions to give people time and space to share their stories on my show.

What is the main focus or theme of your show?

My podcast features extraordinary stories from neurodivergent people that shatter misconceptions, break stigma and showcase the vibrance and diversity of this community. With this podcast, I have created a platform where neurodivergent and disabled entrepreneurs, creatives and advocates can showcase their candid stories, in their own words.

Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you?

I've recorded episodes where I interview nonspeaking autistic guests, who use communication methods like text-to-speech typing on an iPad or spelling their words on a letterboard. Many did not find ways to communicate until their teenage or adult years. Their stories of being underestimated, the joy of communication and the work they do now are amazing and I am honored to help amplify them.

Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why?

Noah Seback: he was the first nonspeaking person I interviewed, and he taught me a lot about the nonspeaking autistic community.

What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about?

My first episode of 2025 is coming out at the end of January -- it's an interview with a former American Idol contestant who is an autistic musician and anti-bullying advocate. I also have interviews coming up with neurodivergent people from the United States, Malaysia and Australia.

A special thanks to CAROLYN for sharing her insightful podcast journey thus far and we wish her all the best with her continued podcast growth.
