Advertising Revenue Growth Strategy Shifts for Podcast Executives Podcast networks are aiming to tap into influencer marketing budgets, as they believe podcast hosts often have a similar social media presence to traditional influencers. Big podcast player iHeartMedia reported an 8% rise in second-quarter revenue, partially due to its strategy of promoting podcast hosts as influencers. However, the challenge lies in convincing those who control influencer marketing budgets of this new approach. | ![]() |

JOHN PAAP’S PODCAST JOURNEY
John Paap is a lover of all things fruit and vegetable. As a co-host on The History of Fresh Produce, he brings his passion for produce to life, sharing interesting facts and stories from the world of fresh fruits and vegetables. With a background in agriculture, John's knowledge about farming practices enriches each episode with insights into how our favourite produce gets from field to table. His engaging style makes even complex topics easy to understand. Whether it’s apples or zucchinis you’re interested in, John has something fascinating to share about every piece of produce that fills your plate. | ![]() |
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background? I've been in love with history since a very young age, fascinated with the stories that have shaped the world we live in today. While history was my passion, the world of fresh produce was all called to me by my father. For over 15 years, I've worked in the fresh produce industry in various roles from marketing to sustainability. | What inspired you to start a podcast? I was hungry to merge by two passions: history and produce. There are so many stories and retelling of stories involving historical events and produce. I wanted to explore this further and share these findings with the world. What better way to do that than through a podcast? |
How did you come up with the name of your podcast? We wanted to keep it simple - we didn't want potential listeners to have to try and figure out what we'd be talking about so we went with The History of Fresh Produce. What you see in the title is pretty much what you get! | What is the main focus or theme of your show? My cohost (Patrick Kelly) and I take a conversational approach in our show discussing history through the lens of fresh produce. We want listeners to feel a deeper connection with the fresh fruits and veg they consume every day and understand the deep role and stories they have through history spanning the course of thousands of years. ![]() |
Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you? Recording live is always memorable. To date, we've had the opportunity to do live recordings at Founders Park in Anaheim, CA where we explored the origins of the California citrus industry and also at Bartram's Garden in Philadelphia, PA which is the site of America's oldest Botanical garden.
| Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why? We loved having Dan Saladino on. My cohost and I are huge fans of his book Eating to Extinction and he provides an amazing perspective into the history of the foods we eat. Dr. Benjamin Carp was another fantastic guest. His passion for the Boston Tea Party is absolutely contagious. What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about? We have recently introduced The History of Fresh Produce CLUB which will allow listeners to gain access to bonus episodes, a dedicated chat community, etc. We are also planning our first in-person live shows for next year. There's nothing better than getting to meet your listeners in person and sharing these stories in front of a live audience. |
A special thanks to JOHN for sharing their insightful podcast journey thus far and we wish them all the best with their continued podcast growth.
