Global Media Usage Sees Slight Increase in 2023, Audio Stays Popular
According to a recent study by PQ Media, worldwide media consumption saw a small increase of 0.3% in 2023, averaging at 56.2 hours per week. This is considerably less than the 3% growth observed in 2022, which was attributed to events such as the Winter Olympics and FIFA World Cup along with various elections taking place globally. The study also found that audio continues to be the second most popular medium worldwide, with its growth mainly fueled by podcasts and music streaming services.

Manta, a Korean digital comics platform, is venturing into audio storytelling for the first time. In partnership with fiction podcast Meet Cute, they will create a scripted audio drama series based on 'I've Become A True Villainess'. The new show is set to premiere on June 11 and will be available on all major podcasting platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
Justin Davidson, a sociolinguist from UC Berkeley, has expressed that Spanish speakers in the US have been looked down upon for their language skills. He says this issue isn't new and is part of America's lengthy history of criticizing those who don't speak only English. This practice dates back to the early 1900s.
Luke Runyon, a seasoned reporter from KUNC and current co-director of the Water Desk at the University of Colorado Boulder's Center for Environmental Journalism, bagged Best Radio Podcast for "Thirst Gap: Learning to live with less on the Colorado River".
Intoware, a specialist in workflow automation, has started a new podcast to assist companies on their journey towards digital transformation. Named 'Digital Transformation Bytes', the podcast can be accessed on Spotify and discusses the advantages of going digital in different industries like manufacturing, engineering and MRO.
Wondery is rolling out a new true crime podcast series called Happily Never After. The first season, titled Happily Never After: Dan & Nancy, will kick off the anthology. Each season of this series will narrate real-life stories about disastrous romantic relationships and their shocking consequences.
