Improv, Games, and a Portal to a Magical World

Arnie Niekamp is a veteran game designer behind hits like Drawful and Trivia Murder Party and the creative force behind the long-running improv comedy podcast Hello from the Magic Tavern. In the show, a fictionalized version of Niekamp hosts a talk show from the magical realm of Foon alongside a wizard and a shapeshifting co-host, interviewing fantastical guests through entirely improvised conversations that have built a dedicated cult following over hundreds of episodes. Podcast Tip Of The Day

When a guest cancels last minute, keep your show on track with these steps:

  1. Have a "Plan B" Ready: Keep a solo episode, interview, or curated highlights pre-recorded for emergencies.

  2. Communicate Clearly: Send reminders and confirm details with guests in advance to reduce no-shows.

  3. Pivot Creatively: Use the gap to try a new format like a Q&A, behind-the-scenes, or audience-driven episode.

  4. Be Transparent: Briefly inform listeners of changes—honesty builds trust and loyalty.

  5. Reschedule Gracefully: Maintain relationships by offering to rebook and seeking substitute recommendations.

A Final Note

“Staying flexible turns podcasting obstacles into creative opportunities and unexpected growth.”
