WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE PODCAST WORLD
Nebula and Spotify Team Up for Educational Podcast Content

Nebula, a streaming service owned by creators, has secured a video content agreement with Spotify. This arrangement will add material from over 100 of Nebula's educational creators to Spotify's Podcasters hub. The hub already provides access to over 2.5 million podcast episodes that users can watch.

The latest research in a continuing series on weekly podcast listeners reveals that most consumption happens within 24 hours of a new episode airing. Women and regular podcast listeners are more likely to listen to older episodes. This study, one of two carried out each year by Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights, along with MARU/Matchbox, gathered data from over 600 participants in April about various aspects of podcast listening habits.

Podcasting is bringing back the popularity that radio once enjoyed, experiencing massive growth in recent times. It appears as though everyone is launching their own podcast these days - including us, who wrote this article. Previously, podcasts mainly targeted an adult audience. However, children are now beginning to tune in too.

Several well-known BBC journalists shared their thoughts on podcasting at The Podcast Show in London. Presenters Nick Robinson, Amol Rajan and Justin Webb, along with Adam Fleming of Newscast and Marianna Spring who covers disinformation and social media, all expressed their enjoyment of the informal conversational style typical of podcasts. However, they also cautioned that this informality can lead to a loss of discipline when broadcasting live radio shows.

The Standard's new main podcast, Life in Seven Songs, launches on June 18. This fascinating show asks notable individuals around the world to choose seven songs that represent their life story. The program highlights how music deeply resonates with us and accompanies us throughout our journey in life.

In the newest season of "The Plot Thickens" podcast by TCM and Novel, presenter Ben Mankiewicz has turned into a treasure seeker. Perhaps he always had this trait as being a film historian often involves uncovering and highlighting forgotten work. Moreover, presenting any new movie to others for the first time can be likened to Indiana Jones finding the Ark of the Covenant – an experience that Mankiewicz replicates in "The Plot Thickens."

  • Podcast consumption is undercounted due to co-listening with friends, family and children; 14% of the weekly podcast audience say they ‘frequently’ listen with others.

  • The co-listening profile varies by genre: Consumers who frequently co-listen make up a large proportion of the kids/family genre (31%) and rewatch podcasts (26%).

  • They also found that half of heavy podcast consumers have a “side hustle,” which the companies say means that podcasts are a good ad platform for brands to reach entrepreneurs and those with several roles.

  • YouTube is the most utilized podcast listening platform in the U.S. for the last year and half: 31% say it is the platform they use the most, followed by Spotify (21%) and Apple (12%).

  • When it comes to discovery YouTube is the dominant podcast platform while TikTok leads social media for podcast discovery among 18–34 podcast consumers.

Everybody Media

The International Women's Podcast Awards is an event that celebrates the achievements of women and diverse genders in podcasting. Scheduled for June 19, 2024 at Savoy Place in London, it will be a hybrid event with both physical and virtual participation. The awards are inclusive for queer and trans individuals, recognizing talent across the sector - from independent creators to established audio teams. This year's awards will honor excellence across several categories including educational shows and storytelling podcasts. Winners will be chosen by a panel of expert judges comprising podcasters, journalists and professionals.

Harsh Mander

Harsh Mander is a well-known Indian author, social activist, teacher and researcher. Born on April 17, 1955, he launched the Karwan-e-Mohabbat campaign to support victims of religiously-motivated violence. He also serves as the Director for the Center for Equity Studies in New Delhi and has held roles such as Special Commissioner to India's Supreme Court and member of the National Advisory Council.

In addition to his activism work, Mander is an educator teaching about poverty

and governance at institutions like the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and St. Stephen’s College in Delhi. He has written numerous books and frequently contributes articles to newspapers including The Hindu, Hindustan Times and Dainik Bhaskar along with academic journals.
