SARENE LEEDS’ PODCAST JOURNEY

Meet Sarene Leeds, a professional writer and storyteller. She is the host of "Emotional Abuse Is Real", where she invites survivors and experts to talk about emotional and narcissistic abuse. By sharing their stories, they aim to provide hope and aid for others recovering from similar experiences. Sarene believes in highlighting the invisible scars left by such abuses, spreading awareness about its reality, and aiding in healing trauma.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I’m a professional writer and podcaster. I have a master’s degree in professional writing, and my background is in journalism. I’ve worked at Rolling Stone and The Wall Street Journal, and I’m currently a contributing writer for Rescripted.com.

What inspired you to start a podcast?

I was emotionally abused by my boss at Rolling Stone over a decade ago. I tried telling my story (and other survivors’ stories) in an article that was never published. I still wanted these stories to be told, so I started a podcast instead.

How did you come up with the name of your podcast?

One of the first survivors I featured on the podcast told me the one thing he hoped people could understand about emotional abuse, which is an invisible form of abuse, is that it’s real.

What is the main focus or theme of your show?

Sharing the stories of emotional and narcissistic abuse survivors to raise awareness about the topic.

Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you?

Lately, I’ve been engaging in podcast guesting swaps with other women. I love how comfortable and organic these interviews have been because we're just out there getting to know one another and sharing our stories. I’m not interested in people who just want to promote their book or regurgitate their talking points.

Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why?

Sarah Jacobs and Jamie Berger of Jacobs Berger, LLC. Sarah and Jamie are family law attorneys who specialize in divorcing narcissistic abusers. I’ve had them on twice and their advice and insights are invaluable to anyone leaving an abusive partnership.

What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about?

Perhaps in 2025. Right now, I want my podcast to be known as a safe space for survivors to share their stories.

A special thanks to SARENE for sharing her insightful podcast journey thus far and we wish her all the best with her continued podcast growth.
