Big Names Dominate Podcast Industry, Leaving Little Room for Others

Podcasting is becoming more difficult for those without a large following, with the top 100 podcasts reaching only 60% of US audience. Only podcasters with a large number of followers are able to earn significant money and draw in audiences due to brand partnerships. This difficulty is highlighted by Spotify's $20 million loss on the unsuccessful Archetypes podcast featuring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

KEN VOLANTE’S PODCAST JOURNEY

Ken Volante, the host of the podcast "Something (rather than nothing)", dives deep into philosophical and psychological aspects of creation. The show explores various forms of creativity through conversations with poets, musicians, writers, painters, thinkers and everyday people. It seeks to understand why there is something rather than nothing in this world by focusing on the process and purpose behind creating things.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I am originally from Pawtucket, RI but now live out west in Oregon. I have degrees in Philosophy and English from The University of Rhode Island. I have a Masters in Philosophy from Marquette University as well as a M.S. in Labor Studies from The University of Massachusetts.

I started Something (rather than nothing) Podcast in 2019.

What inspired you to start a podcast?

I feel that art and philosophy belong to the people and I ask questions that spark wonder

How did you come up with the name of your podcast?

I was vexxing for a long while about the title. My friend Megan got me into working in the arts back in 2016. When she heard the title (which is a profound philosophical question) she said that title is IT!

What is the main focus or theme of your show?

Deep and connected conversations that show the wonder of thinking. My guests feel welcome and hard. What is Art? Why do we create? Why do we live in a world of somethings rather than nothings? (or do we?)

Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you?

The strange pause/giggle/confusion whenever I ask the titular question. Happens every episode.

Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why?

Raven Jaurez - She inspires me as an arts educator and was my 100th episode

What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about?

The show will move to intermittently feature entire episodes of performance art.

A special thanks to Ken Volante for sharing his insightful podcast journey thus far and we wish him all the best with his continued podcast growth.
