STEPHEN CLAPHAM’S PODCAST JOURNEY

Stephen Clapham is the host of the Behind the Balance Sheet podcast. With a passion for making investing more understandable, Stephen speaks with top investors and experts to shed light on what makes an investment successful. Whether you're a professional investor, a student aspiring to enter the industry, or just someone interested in private investing, Stephen's goal is to educate, entertain and help improve your investing skills. He brings in well-known guests along with some hidden gems from the world of finance and investment.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I am the former partner of a multi billion hedge fund and I "retired" to start a business training investors a few years ago. I also set myself a new challenge each year, including writing a book (nr 1 investing bestseller on Amazon); dong a video every week for a year on YouTube; launching a newsletter (which gets 15k views per week) and starting a podcast.

What inspired you to start a podcast?

I have had a brilliant time as an investment analyst and I wanted to encourage young people to consider the same career which has been incredibly fulfilling (and financially rewarding) for me.

How did you come up with the name of your podcast?

Its a terrible name for a podcast but its the name of my training business and the idea is to look behind the numbers

What is the main focus or theme of your show?

I interview professional investors and they tell me their tricks is the main theme, but I have surprise guests, like a man dying of cancer or England rugby manager Sir Clive Woodward. The idea is to learn how to be a better investor and live a fulfilled life.

Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you?

Worst moment: I couldn't work the camera and Sir Clive Woodward was staring at me. He is an imposing man whose motto is preparedness. I knew what he was thinking - I hadn't prepared properly. I gave up and pretended I had it working - we had to can the video version!

Peter Cowley talked about how 2 of his 3 sons committed suicide, and said he might burst into tears but it was me who cried.

Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why?

Sir Bill Browder, the man who took on Putin. I have been a great admirer of his and it was wonderful to sit down and talk for an hour. He is am amazing raconteur.

What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about?

We have started a second podcast looking at the energy transition which I do with a famous climate change finance expert. And we may do other mini-series - I am looking at a series of interviewing a particular genre of investor and another on a particular sector.

A special thanks to Stephen for sharing his insightful podcast journey thus far and we wish him all the best with his continued podcast growth.
