Political Spending and Digital Growth Impact Cumulus' Revenue

Cumulus Media's Q3 2024 revenue was $204 million, a slight decrease from the previous year but in line with predictions. Digital revenue saw an increase of 7.5%, driven by growth in the company's Digital Marketing Services division. The quarter also experienced a downturn in political spending due to changes in presidential candidates, but it has since rebounded significantly.

Why Do People Listen to Podcasts at Double Speed?

A growing trend involves people speeding up their podcasts and other media, a habit that critic Nicholas Quah encourages. Audible reports that about 5% of its audience listens at speeds of 1.5 times or faster, a tendency which UCLA psychology professor Alan Castel attributes to improved information retention and reduced "mind wandering" among younger listeners. While comprehension can decline with more than double the average speech rate, Castel suggests individuals can train themselves to understand speech at triple the normal speed.

DEAN TFG’S PODCAST JOURNEY

Meet Dean, the engaging host of TotalCultZone Presents. With a passion for all things film - new, old, cult-classics or hidden gems - Dean is here to guide you through an eclectic world of cinema. From today's blockbusters to films that may have slipped under your radar, he'll be there to reveal it all in a straightforward and easy-to-understand way. Just sit back and let Dean introduce you to movies you might never have heard of but could end up loving!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

Failed Pro-wrestler, failed Mixed Martial artist, failed artist, failed human being. I joke, I've tried a lot of things and enjoyed the heck out of them, just not for me. While I did all this, I paid the bills working as a security guard all over London in some of the nicest locations ever, meeting the best and worst of society.

What inspired you to start a podcast?

Which one? A friend tricked me into doing my first one with the promise of fame and fortune; he said all I'd have to do was talk into a microphone. It was all downhill from there. The most recent show was because I needed to connect with people again, I'd been doing them on and off for so many years at this point it was 2nd nature to pick up the microphone and come up with an idea.

How did you come up with the name of your podcast?

Current one is based around the concept of me not being able to niche down to a specific topic and, my website for years being Totalcultzone... on that I post everything and anything I'm working on, so it's just what I'm into.

What is the main focus or theme of your show?

Right now it's movies, the current show is in it's 6th season, each season has had a different theme. Going from nonsense trivia to role playing games and audio drama.

Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you?

In one of my early episodes I was moving/renovating a house and the electricity was turned off for the night. I had to record with only the battery left on the laptop, steal Wi-Fi from a neighbour, and record via candlelight.

Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why?

Randle Parker, the absolute menace of a human and much-missed podcaster

What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about?

Interviews with movie folks maybe? I've been on a roll lately, getting some semi-exclusive movie releases to review, and been offered a couple of interviews with folks as well. I’ve also been doing a bit of video work, I don't consider that to be a podcast but YouTube has been kind of late so gonna feed that beast a little.

A special thanks to DEAN for sharing his insightful podcast journey thus far and we wish him all the best with his continued podcast growth.

PODCAST TOOL OF THE DAY

  • Create Your Feed

Click "Create New Feed", opt for Private, and fill in title, author, and description. These details will be visible to subscribers on podcast apps. Include a link which may appear in some apps. Choose 'Instant' as the type if you want all episodes in one playlist - perfect for courses. For ongoing content, select 'Date-Based'. If no image is available, use a temporary one; it can always be changed later.

  • Add Episodes

To add an episode, simply drag and drop your media files. The system will automatically convert videos to audio. Every file you upload becomes a separate episode when uploaded in bulk. Remember, the files show up alphabetically so if you want them in a specific order, number them before uploading.

  • Organize Episodes

To rearrange the episodes in an Instant feed, simply drag them into your desired order. You can also modify the episode title by clicking on it. To change the order of a Date-Based feed, adjust the scheduled date; remember that the most recent will show up first. Once you've finalized an episode, toggle on the publish switch to release it. If it's a scheduled episode, don't worry - it won't be released until its set date.

  • Add Listeners

Create a Universal Link for email opt-ins. Use the "Listeners" section if you want unique links for each person, and add emails in bulk if needed. Each listener will receive an invitation to subscribe via their podcast app. To test your feed, use the Universal Link or add yourself as a test listener. Keep in mind that app refreshing might be necessary to see feed updates.

  • Automate Listener Addition

With Zapier, you have an option to add listeners to your feed automatically. Just follow a specific step in your Zap for this process.

  • Managing Listeners

To stop a particular listener's access, simply switch off their feed link. If you prefer automation, use Zapier for this task.
