Black Listeners Still Prefer Radio Over Podcasts

A global study by Magna Media Trials and The Shade Room found that Black culture strongly influences consumer behavior, especially among Gen Z and Millennials, due to its creativity, authenticity, and sense of community. Social media is the top channel for engaging with Black culture. People are attracted to Black culture for its unique perspective, not just shared identity, and they want meaningful conversations with brands. While interest in podcasts among Black listeners is growing, AM/FM radio remains their dominant audio platform. Research also shows Black listeners are more likely to remember and buy brands advertised on their favorite podcasts.

Podcast Tip Of The DayYour podcast email list is more than just a broadcast channel—it’s a direct line to your most engaged listeners. Use it strategically to deepen relationships: share behind-the-scenes stories, invite subscribers to Q&As or live events, and offer exclusive content or early episode access. By focusing on community-building and value (not just notifications), you’ll turn casual listeners into passionate advocates who support and share your show. Pro move: Segment your list based on listener behavior (e.g., episode downloads, survey responses) to deliver more personalized and relevant messages. | ![]() |
