Did You Know?
A recent study by UN Women's Unstereotype Alliance has found that 62% of UK radio and podcast ads predominantly feature Estuary English or King’s English accents. Northern England accents are used in only 19% of the advertisements. Welsh, Scottish, and Midlands' accents were even less common, featuring in just 2%, 2%, and 1% of ads respectively.
There’s a discrepancy in gender representation with women voicing only 36% of audio ads despite constituting 51% of the population. Men's voices are particularly prevalent in finance (53%), entertainment (48%) and food (47%) audio ads. However, female voices dominate the retail advertisement sector at a ratio of more than two to one.
Finance adverts voiced by women were found to be more memorable suggesting brands could benefit from including more diversity in their voiceovers.
