Spotify Changes Plan for Displaying Podcast Plays

Spotify planned to show public play counts on all podcasts, hoping to attract new fans. However, podcasters criticized this move, arguing it would only benefit already popular shows and discourage listeners from smaller ones. Responding to the backlash, Spotify adjusted its approach. Now, only podcasts with a minimum of 50,000 plays will display counts and these will be updated at certain milestones like 100k or 1m plays.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background? I'm a Nigerian-American journalist, host, and founder of the Human2Human podcast. With over 10 years in the entertainment industry, I’ve built a career rooted in storytelling, vulnerability, and connection. My work centers human experience, emotional honesty, and bridging cultures through deep, meaningful conversations. | What inspired you to start a podcast? I was going through my own personal transformations and didn’t believe being alone in that was healthy or necessary. I needed spaces where I could be without performing and connect while still evolving. That’s why I started Human2Human—to create a space where growth, honesty, and humanity could coexist, and where we’re reminded that transformation also deserves community. |
How did you come up with the name of your podcast? I was on the phone with my cousin, feeling really disappointed about an opportunity I didn’t get. She said, “I don’t even think that role fit you—you’ve always been so human to human anyway.” A light bulb went off. I stayed up all night mapping out what a show called Human2Human could be—and that moment sparked everything. | What is the main focus or theme of your show? The main focus of Human2Human is to explore the human experience through vulnerable, intentional conversations. Each episode dives into topics like identity, healing, love, purpose, and growth—often through the lens of culture, family, and storytelling. It’s about creating a safe space to reflect, feel seen, and grow together, one honest conversation at a time. ![]() |
Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you? Absolutely. One moment that sticks out was during a live episode when a guest got emotional reflecting on their relationship with their father. The audience was silent, fully present. It reminded me why I started Human2Human—to create space for truth, even the tender parts. Those unscripted, raw moments are the heartbeat of the show.
| Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why? One of my favorite guests so far has been Kelly Rowland. She brought so much warmth, wisdom, and authenticity to our conversation. Watching someone so iconic speak with such humility and emotional depth was powerful. We immediately created trust and had an authentic conversation as people and women and that connection is the heart of the show. What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about? What’s next for Human2Human? We’re focused on strengthening and growing our community. This year, we’re hosting intimate mixers in LA and Houston to connect with our listeners in real life and create more spaces for honest, meaningful interaction. |
