Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

As an actor, writer, gourmet Cook, landscape, architect, and all round creative person, I cross paths with tons of people in the arts, including friends and creators of my husband, who is a musician and photographer. I’ve lived in New Jersey, my whole life. And the proximity to New York usually makes people ignore what’s right around them. I don’t.

What inspired you to start a podcast?

I started podcasting in an attempt to introduce myself to town residents during a political campaign because, even though I’ve lived in my community for over 30 years, it’s a bedroom community that doesn’t lend itself to meeting people easily. Knowing tons of people in the arts helped me decide to make them the focus of my podcast.

How did you come up with the name of your podcast?

People think that New York is the only place for the arts to flourish. But I know that many of those artists actually come from New Jersey. Why not focus on them, especially the unknown ones?

What is the main focus or theme of your show?

The main focus of my podcast. Are people in arts and culture in New Jersey. But sometimes I veer away a little bit. Because, after all, it’s my podcast!

Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you?

The unfortunate memorable moments are the ones where my recording equipment failed. One time my dog pulled out the microphone jack, unbeknownst to me. Luckily, my interviewee lived nearby and was able to come back for a second interview.

Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why?

I interviewed Vinnie Brand, the comedian and comedy club owner. I had to basically harass him for months before he finally came for the interview, but he stayed so long that I had to make it two episodes and he promised to come back again if I wanted him to.

What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about?

I’ll be posting interviews with Glenn Alexander, a world-class guitarist who played with the Mahavisnu Project & currently plays with Bobby Bandiera and Tim McLoone, the man who founded and runs Holiday Express, a charitable group dedicated to bringing holiday cheer to those who most need it.

A special thanks to Lucille Lo Sapio for sharing her insightful podcast journey thus far and we wish her all the best with her continued podcast growth.

Gain Listeners With Social Media Hooks

Imagine standing in a baseball arena full of podcasters and everyone yelling out for attention at the same time. That is basically what’s happening on every social media platform at this time due to the fact software is so cheaply available now which allows people to copy a URL and clip podcasts down to bite-sized video clips. Don’t get me wrong - social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube & Facebook can be absolute powerhouses when it comes to growing your audience. But there’s one advantage that we discussed last week that you already have.

Knowing what your audience wants

Once you’ve figured out why your audience enjoys your show so much to spend valuable time each week listening to your podcast, you can create social media hooks that will instantly grab the attention of new listeners & social media followers. And draw them into your podcast community like a moth to a flame.

What is a social media hook?

A social media hook is a strategic and compelling element integrated into social media content, designed to grab the audience’s attention and prompt engagement with the post. It often involves using intriguing statements, questions, or visually captivating elements from your podcast to entice users to explore your content further.

Take a look at one of our TikTok videos of Ricky Gervais which has an instant hook to the video and achieved over 4 million views…

Why Are Social Media Hooks Important?

1. Immediate Attention

In a world saturated with information, capturing users’ interest can be challenging. Hooks are powerful tools that can instantly draw listeners in, whether through headlines, images, videos, or catchy opening sentences; thereby increasing the chances of making a lasting impression.

2. Enhanced Engagement

Hooks can be thought-provoking questions, bold statements, eye-catching visuals, or humorous anecdotes that encourage likes, comments, and shares; thus increasing the visibility of your podcast on various platforms.

3. Effective Storytelling

Hooks can be a catchy phrase, an intriguing question, or a surprising fact that piques curiosity and entices the audience to learn more. This technique helps podcasters create a strong emotional connection and communicate their message memorably with their audience.

4. Brand Recognition

Regularly using hooks helps create a distinctive style that your audience can easily recognize; thereby, establishing a strong brand identity and making it more memorable.

5. Improved Message Delivery

Hooks are crucial for delivering your core message concisely and effectively in a crowded online space. They can be an attention-grabbing headline, an intriguing opening sentence, or a striking visual element that ensures your message is seen and heard.

6. Encourages Interaction

Social media platforms thrive on user engagement. Hooks that capture attention and encourage participation through open-ended questions, polls, or calls to share opinions foster a sense of community and enhance interactivity.

Ways to Create Social Media Hooks

1. Highlight the Value

Emphasize the key value or benefit your podcast provides to the audience. Communicate what they will gain or learn, which can capture their attention and encourage engagement.

2. Curiosity

Arouse curiosity by asking thought-provoking questions or sharing intriguing information that leaves the audience wanting more. This can lead to continued interaction and deeper engagement.

3. Emotional Appeal

Personalize your hooks to evoke emotions, creating a strong connection with your audience. Tailoring your content to suit their needs, interests, and experiences makes it more relatable and engaging.

4. Reveal Secrets

Offer glimpses of something unique, surprising, or exclusive to generate curiosity and interest. This strategy is particularly effective in building anticipation for new products or services.

5. Use Numbers

Incorporate statistics or numerical data to enhance credibility. Using numbers, percentages, or graphs makes your content more informative and persuasive, establishing your authority on the topic.

6. Use Superlatives

Utilize superlatives like “best,” “greatest,” or “most innovative” to create a positive perception. This emphasizes the excellence of your subject matter, capturing attention and encouraging deeper engagement.

7. Create Thumb-Stopping Visuals

Add captivating visuals such as images, videos, infographics, and other graphic elements relevant to your content. High-quality visuals that are engaging and relevant to your target audience enhance the appeal and effectiveness of your message.

Implementing these techniques increases the likelihood of your audience engaging with your social media content.

Once your social media accounts start and gain traction with likes, followers & comments, it’s time to nurture your new-found followers back to your landing page. Here, you can offer them something valuable that you created last week, in exchange for gathering their email addresses. And so begins the cycle I showed you last week to exponentially grow.

Tomorrow, I will show you a tool that coupled with your landing page and social media videos will grow your email database while you sleep. It’s THAT powerful
