PODCAST FACTS
Did You Know?
Tim Westergren and Jon Kraft created the Music Genome Project in a small San Francisco apartment. It's a system that describes music using over 450 attributes. They tried to license this technology, initially named Savage Beast Technologies, to AOL, Best Buy and others for four years but got no interest. So in 2005, they launched Pandora as their own online music discovery service. Pandora still helps users discover new songs and matches stations to user tastes. Nowadays though, it uses artificial intelligence instead of human musicians to categorize songs.
Pandora was the first online service to make personalisation a key part of the experience, which has been imitated by Spotify and Apple Music.
Pandora has since launched Stories, a marketing tool similar to Genius’ Behind the Lyrics, in which artists can give narrative and deeper insights into tracks. It also added podcasting, which looks to be the next battleground for all of the key music streaming services.
