Netflix Plans to Include Video Podcasts

Netflix is considering adding video podcasts to its platform as they become more popular, according to co-CEO Ted Sarandos. The company is open to collaborations with a wide range of producers and content creators. Netflix already collaborates with third parties on several podcast shows that promote its content. The move could help counter competition from YouTube, which has seen significant growth in podcast viewing time. However, Netflix believes it offers better monetization opportunities for certain types of creators and storytelling.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background? After getting a degree in Radio/TV at San Francisco State Univ, I worked as a radio production Director and engineer in San Francisco radio at high-profile stations including legends like KSAN, KSFO, and KYA. In 1987, I launched Fantasy Play-By-Play, a 20yr interactive sports attraction for professional sports teams, and the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL, allowing fans to be recorded sports announcers. | What inspired you to start a podcast? Podcasting came naturally to me as I've been doing audio production since I was 15. From goofy outgoing phone messages in the 70s, radio production in 80s, creating a national radio syndication (that was repurposed as a podcast), developed corporate newsletters, then podcasting. The only thing that's changed for me is distribution! |
How did you come up with the name of your podcast? From the book "Golf by Design" by Robert Trent Jones Jr on golf course architecture. | What is the main focus or theme of your show? An eclectic mix of evergreen golf topics for recreational golfers. From game improvement, to the mental game, new technology, fitness, travel, authors, great stories, and more. What we don't focus on is news of the day/week from the professional golf tours. ![]() |
Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you? Traveling and playing golf with groups of listeners in places like Prague, Scottsdale, and San Francisco. Once, we broke the story of a young man who snuck into N.Korea to play in the N.Korean Open! We started so early that we frequently had to explain a "podcast" and "iTunes" to guests.
| Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why? Annually since 2018, during the week of The Masters (first weekend in April) we feature Dr. Bob Jones IV, grandson of legendary golfer, and creator of The Masters, Bobby Jones, sharing intimate stories about his grandfather. What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about? As we're the longest running golf improvement podcast, starting in late 2005. we're very excited to approach the publication of episode 1,000 on May 20, 2025! |
