J.B. WOGAN’S PODCAST JOURNEY

Meet J.B. Wogan, a dedicated solutions journalist based in Alexandria, Virginia. He has vast experience covering government on all levels for various print and digital media outlets. Currently, he hosts the podcast 'On The Evidence', where he delves into public policy and social science research topics. Outside of his work commitments, J.B's interests lie in complex policy matters such as social impact bonds and public sector innovation models amongst others.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

At the start of the Great Recession, I was covering politics and government when I became interested in the role that economic forces play in public policy, prompting me to back to school. My coursework deepened my interest in how economic and statistical data could help bypass partisan politics and help public officials institute more effective policies and programs.

What inspired you to start a podcast?

I wanted to bridge the gap between the social science research community and public sector workers who are in a position to put research-based insights to use. When I joined the communications team at Mathematica, a data analytics consultancy, I saw the success of podcasts like Freakonomics, Planet Money, and Hidden Brain, and I believed a podcast would be a great way to make policy-related research approachable for policymakers and practitioners who aren't keeping up with the latest peer-reviewed journals.

How did you come up with the name of your podcast?

The show is called On the Evidence and the premise is that our understanding of today's most pressing challenges and our responses to those challenges should be based on the best (i.e. most reliable and scientific) available information (or “evidence”).

What is the main focus or theme of your show?

Every episode somehow relates to the intersection of social science research and public policy. Some episodes zero in on new findings, featuring a mix of guests who conducted the research, funded the research, or who represent the kind of policymakers/practitioners who could use insights from the research in their work. Some episodes are more about organizations and trends in the field, e.g. we recently featured guests from the Millennium Challenge Corporation and AmeriCorps to talk about the role that research and evaluation play in the work of those federal agencies.

Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you?

I planned to interview Abigail Aiken for my podcast, a renowned social scientist in reproductive health. At her presentation, I noticed she shared her findings through stories rather than just stats and charts. Despite planning to talk about her professional journey and work contributions, I asked about her storytelling approach. This led us down an unexpected path, discussing the role of storytelling in Irish culture (she's Irish) and its power to make impressions that numbers can't.

Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why?

Another favorite episode of mine is with Anita Summers. She became an economist in the 1940s, a time when few women were in this field. She worked for various respected institutions and championed policies based on solid evidence. I interviewed her just before her 96th birthday, where she shared many interesting stories from her life.

What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about?

As we celebrate our five-year anniversary, we plan to do more live shows either in person or on YouTube. We have also increased our video content on YouTube for those who prefer it over traditional podcasts. So, watch out for more of our YouTube videos and shorts.

A special thanks to J.B. for sharing his insightful podcast journey thus far and we wish him all the best with his continued podcast growth.
