Changes in YouTube Shorts View Count Method YouTube is changing how it counts views for its short-form video feature, YouTube Shorts. From March 31, 2025, a view will be added as soon as the video begins to play with no minimum viewing time required. The old metric will be renamed "engaged views" and can still be accessed in creators' analytics under "Advanced Mode." | ![]() |

CHRIS CLARKE’S PODCAST JOURNEY
Meet Chris Clarke, the passionate host of 90 Miles from Needles podcast. With his vast experience as an environmental journalist and desert activist, Chris brings decades of advocacy for America's Southwest deserts to his listeners. His goal? To shed light on the unique ecology, conservation needs and looming threats facing these fragile ecosystems. From climate change to industrial energy projects - nothing is off-limits in this insightful podcast about defending our precious deserts. | ![]() |
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background? I'm an environmental journalist with about 35 years in the trade, and I have loved the deserts of North America for the last 40. (And lived in the desert for 17 years now!) I've spent most of my career working in "lean team" environments, and I thrive on that kind of demanding schedule. | What inspired you to start a podcast? I've got some radio and TV experience, and had a wildly popular blog in the 2000s (or at least wildly popular in my particular niche). People have been telling me I should start a podcast almost since the term was coined. I finaly started to listen to those people. |
How did you come up with the name of your podcast? To be completely honest, it came to me in a dream. It struck me as having the kind of feeling I wanted: Needles is a remote desert twn, and 90 miles from there puts you into the back of beyond. It's not as transparent to everyone else, though. | What is the main focus or theme of your show? Environmental activism in the desert, which includes both habitat conservation and environmental justice issues, as well as Native land sovereignty rights. We also talk about desert natural history, with episodes on desert tree species, snakes, coyotes, bighorn sheep, Mexican wolves, weather and safety, etc. ![]() |
Have there been any particularly memorable moments during the recording that stick out to you? While covering a demonstration on the steps of the Utah State Capitol, one of my absolute favorite writers, Terry Tempest Williams, agreed to do an impromptu interview with us. I also recorded a segment while standing in the lowest spot in the Western Hemisphere in Death Valley, with temperatures at around 122 degrees F.
| Who has been one of your favorite guests so far, and why? Audrey Scheere of Tucson, a social media influencer, who was so engaging and funny in our Saguaro episode that we added her to our board of directors. What's next for your show – any exciting plans we should know about? I plan to do a series of episodes this summer featuring the Moab to Mojave Conservation Corridor, traveling from Arches to Joshua Tree and visiting each park, monument, or other protected lands that connect them, while speaking with locals and activists about how they work to protect these places. |
A special thanks to CHRIS for sharing his insightful podcast journey thus far and we wish him all the best with his continued podcast growth.

PODCAST TIP
Landing the right guest can elevate your show—here’s how to craft a pitch that gets a "Yes!":
Personalize Your Message
Avoid generic templates. Mention why they specifically are a great fit for your audience. Reference their work (e.g., "I loved your take on X in [their podcast/article]").
Make It Easy for Them
Include:
A clear ask (e.g., "Join me for a 30-min chat about Y").
Proposed topics (3-4 bullet points tailored to their expertise).
Flexible recording options (e.g., "We can record via Zoom or your preferred platform").
Highlight the Value
Explain what’s in it for them (e.g., exposure to your audience, backlinks, or promo for their project). Example:
"This episode will reach 10K+ listeners in your niche—I’d love to spotlight your [book/service]!"
